Balaton – on the crest of a wave

Mátyás Szik three times hungarian sommelier champion (Tuesday, 17th May)

11:00 – 11:45 | Wines of Hungary stand @Hall 11/ D20 | language: English

Lake Balaton is the largest lake in Central Europe. Viticulture and winemaking around the lake has an unbroken tradition going back to the days of the Roman Empire. The favourable geographical and climatic conditions translate into outstanding wines of individual character. Light reflected by the surface of the lake and volcanic soils are two major contributors to the exquisite quality of wines made in the region. The speaker of the masterclass Mr. Mátyás Szik is a three-time winner of the Hungarian Sommelier Championship; as an advisor and lecturer he is the right person to provide a comprehensive view of this up-and-coming region both in wine tourism and wine production.

Mátyás Szik is a three-time winner of the Hungarian Sommelier Championship. Following his studies at a Secondary School of Economics he graduated as a historian. He entered the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs Best Young Sommelier of the World competition, became a certified sommelier at the Court of Master Sommeliers, he is a tutor at Borkollégium, he is the host of Agrármarketing Centrum’s video series exploring 22 Hungarian wine regions, he is also a spirits expert, professional advisor and consultant.
His clients include numerous domestic wineries, large and small, and he provides them with strategic advice including international trade opportunities. He is a dedicated advocate of quality catering and wine culture in Hungary.
